Sarah Downard

Sarah Elizabeth Downard, a lifetime resident of the Stockport community, died Thursday, Feb. 27 at 2:40 p.m. at the Memorial Hospital at Keosauqua. She had been in failing health for over a year and in the hospital for about two weeks. Had she lived another day she would have reached her 90th birthday.

Lizzie Downard was the last member of a pioneer Van Buren County family. She was born Feb. 28, 1874, the daughter of Ephriam and Margaret Payne Downard. She lived most of her life on the farm two miles south of Stockport where she was born. She attended the Utica School and as was the custom then, the Wolfes Academy at Birmingham.

In early life she joined the Baptist Church at Utica and later the Friends Church at Stockport. About four years ago she moved to Keosauqua where she had since lived.

Two sisters-in-law, Mrs. J.L. Downard of Keosauqua and Mrs. C.W. Downard of Van Wert, and several nieces and nephews survive. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Mary Mellen, and five brothers, Benjamin F., John L., James A., Charles W. and Joseph J.

Services were held Sunday, March 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the Stockport Christian Church in charge of Rev. Althena Spangler, assisted by Rev. Chester C. Werft. Burial was in Millers Chapel cemetery.
