Elizabeth Bonfield Dies At Fairfield

Fairfield - Elizabeth Bonfield, who spent most of her more than 70 years behind the counters of Fairfield department stores, died suddenly Tuesday morning at her home in her usual health during the day, and had performed her duties as manager of the yardage department of Rockwood's department store. About bedtime she complained of feeling ill, and died a few hours later.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bonfield, Miss Bonfield was one of the oldest active people in Fairfield business circles. Her father was a pioneer dry goods merchant here, and in youth she entered the employ of H.A. Graham, another storekeeper. Graham later entered into partnership with W. Wade, and Miss Bonfield continued to work for the Graham-Wade Variety store. After Graham's retirement, Wade operated the store at The Fair store, later selling an interest in it to Miss Bonfield's late brother, George Bonfield worked at the store continuously for 47 years.

After the death of her brother, Wade retired and the store was sold out. When Rockwood's opened it up again about 6 years ago, Miss Bonfield returned to the surroundings that were so familiar to her.

Miss Bonfield leaves two sisters: Katherine Bonfield at home, and Nellie Bonfield, Des Moines. The body is at the Monger funeral home.

Miss Bonfield was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church.
