Mother of 10 Killed Near Albia

Mrs. Shirley Marie Vestal, 34, of Keokuk, was killed Sunday about 1 a.m. as the car in which she was riding went over a 30-foot embankment on Highway 60 three miles south of Albia.

She was the mother of 10 children.

The Vestals were former residents of Bonaparte, where Mr. Vestal is now employed at the Bonaparte Rendering Plant.

Hospitalized in Albia were her husband, Walter Eldon Vestal, 43, with a fractured shoulder blade, numerous cuts and abrasions; and their son, Walter Eugene Vestal, 15, with cuts but no serious injury.

Sheriff William F. Bagley said the northbound car, traveling up Hocking hill, apparently skidded on an icy spot and rolled end over end down the embankment, landing on its top.

Mrs. Vestal had fatal chest injuries. The family had been en route to visit relatives in Melcher.

Mrs. Vestal's body was removed to Centerville, where her husband's parents live. Her own parents live in Numa.

Mrs. Vestal was Shirley Marie Proffit and was born in Creston Nov. 23, 1927, the daughter of Elmer L. and Lola Abel Proffitt. She was married in Centerville Jan. 3, 1946.

She leaves, besides her husband, six daughters and four sons.

She is survived by her parents of Numa, and several brothers and sisters. She was of a family of 10 children. One of her brothers was killed in World War II.

The body is at the Johnson Funeral Home at Centerville where the service will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Rev. James H. Thomas of the First Baptist Church there will officiate.
