OBITUARY OF GEORGE BATCHELOR.

George Batchelor was born in Boston, Massachusetts, April 18th, 1820. At the age of eighteen months he with his parents crossed the ocean to Scotland, where he remained until thirteen years of age when he was apprenticed to a sailor, remaining on the ocean about eighteen years. He was married to Miss Catharine Ramsey April 18th, 1841, at Newcastle, England. In 1844 they moved to New York City, remaining there seven years, when they removed to Cincinnati, Ohio, where they resided ten months, coming to Van Buren county, Iowa, in 1852, and locating on a farm on Vernon Prairie. To them were born eight children, three boys and five girls, five of whom survive: Mrs. Mary Hornbaker, Mrs. Agnes Simmons and James Batchelor being present at the funeral. Mrs. Emma Reith and Mrs. Catharine Wilson residing in Oregon were unable to be present. The other three, John Batchelor, George Batchelor and Mrs. Margaret Simmons have passed to the better land. Mr. Batchelor enlisted in Co. I, 19th Iowa Infantry, August 14th, 1862, and on account of disability was discharged Feb. 23, 1863, returning to his home and family. His first wife died Jan. 5, 1891. He was married July 20th, 1895, to Mrs. Jane Reith who still survives. He was confined to the house for several months with that dreadful disease cancer, and departed this life Feb. 28, 1907, at 6 o'clock. He had been a member of the Presbyterian church for a number of years. Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church in Bentonsport the following Sunday conducted by Rev. McElhinny, assisted by Rev. Lewis of Kansas. The remains were in charge of the G.A.R., he being a member of that order, and were laid to rest by the side of his first wife in the Thompson cemetery last Sunday. An obituary will appear next week.
