ROBERT EUGENE MANNING

Robert Eugene Manning, Petty Officer first class of the U.S.N., son of Fred Manning of Davenport and Mrs. Lois Goodman Manning, now deceased, was killed in an automobile accident at 6:45 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 11, 1952 at Corpus Christi, Texas, while on his way to the naval training station. Petty Officer Manning was born in Iowa July 22 1920 and attended school both at Birmingham and Des Moines. In August 1941 he joined the Navy and attended boot camp at Great Lakes, Ill. After his graduation he was assigned to the air force and was stationed at Jacksonville, Fla., where he attended the aviation machinist mate school. He graduated from the service school with honors and was transferred to California and then to Texas.

In January 1848 he was united in marriage to Miss Julie Cremer of Monrovia, Calif. At the time of his death Petty Officer Manning was manager of the Petty Officers Club at the Naval Training Station.

He is survived by his wife, his daughter, Lois Caryl, aged two years; his father, Fred Manning of Davenport, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Bette Gentosi, Corte Madera, Calif., and Miss Barbara Manning of Minneapolis, Minn.; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. H.I. Manning of Birmingham, Iowa.

On Tuesday, Sept. 16, military services were held in the Protestant Chapel at the Naval Training Station at Corpus Christi and the body was returned to his birthplace for burial.

Funeral services were held Sept. 19 at the Birmingham Methodist church at 10 a.m. Officiating ministers were Rev. Howard C. Irvine, assisted by Rev. Bruce Meyers and Rev. Glenn Lochhead. Music was by Kris Johnston, accompanied by Mrs. Lee Dustin and Martha Mueller, accompanied by Judi Anderson and by church pianist Mrs. Glenn Johnston. Pallbearers were David Miller, Dale Miller, Maurice Miller, Edward Spees, Coyner Spees and Daniel Morris. Burial was in the Birmingham Maple Hill cemetery.
