His early years were spent in the home community where he attended local schools and assisted his father in the work of the home. Here he united with the Christian church where the membership remains.

In 1895 the family moved to Van Buren county, Iowa, locating near Bonaparte. During that summer he returned to Illinois, where on Aug. 25, 1895 he married Sarah Matilda Davis in Blandinsville. Their new home was established on a farm near Bonaparte, where he engaged in farming and the raising of livestock. In 1931 they retired from the farm to make their home in Keosauqua. He was then employed by Van Buren county on the road maintenance department, where he served for 19 years. Mrs. Chipman passed away in December, 1932.

Mr. and Mrs. Chipman were the parents of one son, Ira Eula of Milan, Ill. A foster son, Charles Winters, now of Des Moines was taken into their home at an early age, and lived there until after he finished high school. A nephew, Clyde Davis, also grew up in this home.

He was a member of Keosauqua Lodge No. 10 A.F. and A.M. and the Modern Woodmen of America.

He was a obliging neighbor and friend, a good father, a kind and loving grandfather. Survivors include his son, Eula and wife, Nina; foster son, Charles Winters and wife, Naomi; and five grandchildren, Mrs. Rosalee Milan of Rock Island, Mrs. Frances Whitcanack and Richard Chipman of Milan; Charles David Winters, Jr., and Rebecca Belle Winters of Des Moines; four great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Adaline Brewster of Keosauqua and a brother, Addison Chipman of Bonaparte; a niece Cleda Taapken of Ft.
