DEATH OF MRS. ROBERT SLOAN
--------------------
Mary Brown Sloan died at her home in Keosauqua, Iowa, on the 26th day of August, 1908, after a lingering illness of some years. She was born in the parish of Tillucan, West Mead county, Ireland, on the 11th day of January, 1838, and was married at Keosauqua on the 15th day of July, 1863, to Robert Sloan, who survives her. Ever since her marriage her home had been at Keosauqua. She was the mother of seven children, of whom five survive her: Stella, Hugh B., Robert E. Sloan and Iowa Sloan Therme, all of Keosauqua, and Mary E. Whitney of Paonia, Colorada [sic]. Della died Nov. 28, 1878, and Elizabeth Sloan Duffield, July 16, 1897.Mrs. Sloan united with the Presbyterian church here when she was about twenty years of age, but later, in 1878, she joined the Congregational church of this place by letter, the reason of the change being the discontinuance of services in the Presbyterian church. She loved her church and was a helpful member and a regular attendant as long as her health permitted.
She was a noble woman, an exemplary wife, mother and neighbor. While she was preeminently a home-maker yet her sympathy and help was ever extended to the sick, the distressed and the needy. Truly is it said of her, "Her good works live after her."
Besides her husband and children she leaves two sisters and one brother: Mrs. Sarah Walker and John Brown, of Keosauqua, and Lizzie Brown, of Douds.
The funeral was held at the home at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon, the short but approriate discourse being by Rev. C. S. Cooper. The casket was beautifully decorated with flowers--a loving tribute of relatives and friends. The burial was at the Purdom cemetry [sic].
