Dr. Selman A. Casady 1850-1938

Dr. Selman A. Casady, husband of Ellen Casady, was born May 17, 1850, and died Nov. 15, 1938, at Shenandoah. Iowa, age 88 years, 5 months and 28 days.

He was born north of Cantril and lived in and near Cantril for over 50 years.

He was married in 1873 to Emma Wilson. Three children were born, Paul, who died in infancy, Josie who died about 1900, and Harry Casady, now a merchant of Byers, Colo. Emma Wilson died in 1894.

He was married in 1907 to Ellen Smith who survives.

Dr. Casady was a graduate of the Keokuk Medical College and of Chicago University. He was a practicing physician for over 50 years and a member of the Christian church for more than 50 years. Many of the people here today and dozens of Cantril people were brought into the world by Dr. Casady. He spent the best years of his life in Cantril caring for the sick, day or night, cold, snow or rain, the Doctor was always willing to go. Many times his hands and feet were frozen on cold wintry trips, causing him much trouble it later life.

The doctor spent the last few years of his life peacefully reading and chatting with his friends. He stated many times that he was ready to die. He died peacefully and in peace.

Short funeral services were held at Shenandoah preceding regular funeral services which were held at the Cantril Christian church Thursday afternoon, conducted by the Rev, A. M. Hadley of Milton. Burial was in the Cantril cemetery.
