George B. McKibbin Dies In Chicago

KEOSAUQUA. - George B. McKibbin, 72, Chicago lawyer and native of Keosauqua, was found dead, Wednesday in his office on La Salle street in Chicago.

Death apparently was due to a heart attack. he was alone in the office, his partners not having yet arrived for the day.

McKibbin was graduated from high school here and from Iowa Wesleyan college in 1909. He became a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity there. He received his law degree from the University of Chicago in 1913 and was admitted to the bar the same year.

He was active in Iowa Wesleyan alumni work and for a number of years was chairman of the college board of trustees. He attended the school's commencement in June of this year.

McKibbin's widow, three daughters and two sons survive. Private services for family members will be held Friday in the McKibbin home, with a memorial service Saturday at 2 p.m. in St. James Methodist church in Chicago.

Long active in republican circles and civic work, McKibbin was candidate for mayor of Chicago in 1943. He was defeated by the incumbent, Edward J. Kelly. In 1958 he campaigned unsuccessfully for congressman in the south side second district.

McKibbin was active in YMCA work for years and was chairman of the board of trustees of the Chicago association. He had headed the public aid commission since 1953 under appointment from Gov. William G. Stratton. He served as state director of finance from 1941 to 1945. During 1947-48 he served as an adviser on governmental affairs to Lt. Gen. Lucius D. Clay, American military governor in Germany. For several years up to his death, McKibbin had been a member of President Eisenhower's committee on government contracts. It deals with the employment practices of firms receiving federal contracts.

McKibbin, among other posts, was a member of the board of governors of the National Conference of Christians and Jews and secretary of the council of world service and finance of the Methodist church.
