Obituary of Christopher Warren

Christopher Warren was born in Wexford county, Ireland, Oct. 26, 1840, and died at his home in Vernon township, Van Buren county, Iowa, March 10, 1917, aged 76 years, 4 months and 12 days. He came with his parents to America in the autumn of 1853. The voyage in a sailing vessel was a hard one, 9 weeks long, and many of the passengers, including one of his sisters, died of cholera. After landing at New Orleans they came by boat to St. Louis. As soon as the river was in condition for travel the family came by boat to Alexandria, and from there in wagons to their new home, reaching their destination Feb. 28, 1854. His father, Joseph Warren, purchased part of the farm now owned by Mrs. Jane Warren in Vernon township.

Christopher Warren answered his country's call and enlisted in Co. E, 15th Iowa Infantry, Oct. 14, 1861. He reenlisted Jan. 1, 1864. He was promoted to the rank of corporal and remained with his company until wounded while on picket duty at the battle of Atlanta, August 25, 1864. He fought under Gen. Sherman and was in some of the hardest battles of the war. He was a brave and faithful soldier and endured the hardships and privations of army life longer than most of those who enlisted. He always like to attend reunions and associate with his soldier comrades. He recently attended a national encampment at Washington and expected to attend the reunion at Vicksburg next October.

He endured the hardships of pioneer life in his youth; coming to this county when there were no railroads or river bridges. He was a hard worker and was active and energetic to the last, attending a G.A.R. meeting at Keosauqua, Saturday, going to church at Mt. Sterling Sunday and attending a public sale Tuesday, just previous to his death. He was converted in his early life and united with the Center Chapel Methodist church, of which he was a faithful member of more than 60 years.

Sept. 7, 1871, he was united in marriage with Sarah Elizabeth Fate, who died Dec. 10, 1903. Two children were born to them, Joseph and Mary, both of whom are living at the parental home. He also leaves to mourn their loss two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Warren and Miss Jane Warren and many relatives and friends.

Among his prominent characteristics were honesty, industry, economy, firm faith in God and loyalty to his church and pastor. There was a large attendance at the funeral at Center Chapel, March 12, services in charge of his pastor Rev. Jordan and Harper Post G.A.R. of Keosauqua and burial was in the Chapel cemetery.
