ULYSSES GRANT RICE

Ulysses Grant Rice, son of John and Alice Stevens Rice, was born March 27, 1864, at Memphis, Mo., and departed this life on Dec. 6, 1937, at Milton, Iowa, having reached the age of 73 years, 8 months and 9 days.

He grew to manhood on a farm about two miles northeast of Memphis. He was the youngest of a family of ten children, all of whom preceded him in death. They were Mrs. Omer Van Dyke, Charles, Will, Gus and John Rice, and the following half brothers and sisters: Dr. L.F. Summers, David Summers, Mrs. Lois Yeater and Mrs. Amanda Doughlas.

He received his education in a small country school near his home and in the Memphis school. He began teaching school at seventeen years of age and taught for six years in what was known as the Conyers district near Memphis, Mo.

He came to Milton in the year of 1888, when 24 years of age, and made his home with his brother, Dr. L.F. Summers for whom he worked one year in the drug store. In the following year he went into the hardware business in partnership with J....s. He sold his interest.....
