MRS. MARY JANE TOOPS

Mary Jane Small, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Small, was born at Pulaski, Sept. 1, 1861, and departed this life Sunday June 27, at 1:30 a.m. She had lived to the age of 75 years, 9 months and 26 days.

She was united in marriage with Stephen Alex. Toops Feb. 8, 1881. Two children comprised their family, Florence, who died at the age of 3 years, and Stephen A. Toops, residing at Milwaukee, Wisc. There are no grandchildren. Also surviving are three step-children, William L. of Kahoka, Mo., Lemuel of Ohio, and Charles of Valley Junction, Iowa. One step-daughter, Nettie, preceded her in death.

She ministered unto the needs of these children and her husband. Mrs. Toops has resided in Vernon for 47 years. She also has resided in Wayland, Kahoka and Athens, Mo., and Keokuk, Iowa. She lived at Pulaski until her marriage. Mr. Toops was a soldier in the Civil war. He died 12 years ago and she continued to keep the home up until her death.

She was a very industrious woman, as her garden, lawn and home all display. She was active until the day of her death. Mrs. Troops was a member of the Presbyterian church.

She has two sisters living, Mrs. Anna McVey of Lakin, Kansas, and Mrs. Alice McKenzie of Greeley, Neb. Also ten step grandchildren remain to mourn her loss.

Funeral services were held at her late home in Vernon Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., June 29, the Rev. H.E. Butler, pastor of the Methodist church conducting the services. Interment was made in the Vernon cemetery.
