**Handwritten: V.B. Record 21 April 1938

Mrs. Kate Humphryes

Rachel Louise Cresap, daughter of Daniel Hanson and Eliza Hendrickson Cresap, was born Nov. 26, 1842, near Cumberland, Md., and died April 13, 1938, at Fairfield, Iowa, having reached the age of 95 years, 4 months and 18 days.

At an early age her mother died and she went to live with her grandfather and grandmother Hendrickson, where she lived until she came to Bonaparte in 1869. Here, on July 5, 1875, she married Henry J. Humphryes. Born to this union were three children, all of whom survived, two daughters and one son, Mrs. Bess Shinblom, Mrs. Georgia Junkins of Fairfield, Iowa, and R. Keith Humphryes of Lead, South Dakota, and one half brother, Daniel Cresap, of Bonaparte, and nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She joined the Methodist church many years ago, was an active member of the Ladies Aid as long as she was able.

She was the oldest woman in Bonaparte, and one of the oldest in the county. She was of a happy, friendly disposition and will be sadly missed by a wide circle of relatives, and friends who are used to looking toward "Aunt Kate" where you were sure to see her by the window or if weather permitted in a rocking chair on the front porch, a cheery smile and a vacant chair was ready, for any who had time to tarry for a little chat.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. L.E. Winfrey at the Bonaparte Methodist church Saturday afternoon, with interment in Bonaparte cemetery.
