ROBERT W. WILEY

Robert William, son of James and Mary Brown Wiley, was born Jan. 8, 1860, in Des Moines township on a farm west of Mt. Sterling where, with the exception of a trip to California, and one to New Mexico, his many useful years were spent and here he passed away Saturday p.m. Oct. 1, 1938, at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 23 days.

Although he suffered a light paralytic stroke in the early spring he was able to help some with the farm chores, etc., until Monday, Sept. 26 when he was stricken with a complication which his enfeebled condition could not long resist.

In 1879 he united with the Methodist church at Home Prairie which has since been merged with the Cantril church.

When his father died suddenly in 1879, William, only 19 years old, took much of the responsibility for keeping the home in the typical, helpful, upright and honest wey(sp) of the pioneers. In it was found that sympathetic care for the mother in her declining years, she having died in 1904, for the brother John when his wife passed away and he came home with his two younger children, Mabel and Stanley, his other children, Stella and Gertie, staying with their grandmother Bowles. Here also John and Stanley were cared for during their last illness. The two sisters, Mrs. Mary J. Cavitt and Mrs. Elizabeth A. McIntosh have also passed on.

The younger brother, James H., and niece, Mabel Wiley, who have so faithfully returned the tender care given them, are left at home to mourn together with a number of other nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends who will long remember him as their good friend and neighbor.

Funeral services with Rev. C.H. Orf officiating were held from the Burnett Funeral Home in Keosauqua Monday afternoon, Oct. 4, 1938. Burial was in Prall cemetery.
