MRS. LILLIAN MINER RECEIVES DETAILS OF HER SON'S DEATH

Mrs. Lillian Miner of Picher, Okla., received a letter from her late son's commanding officer explaining how Pfc. Lester Miner, as a member of the Marine corps platoon, lost his life while in the service on Guam last July 22.

Said Capt. Robert McCabe, commander:

"Lester was a member of our firs platoon. During the operation his platoon was called on to take up a new position and clear out entrenched Japs who had a company of the First battalion pinned down under their fire. While advancing forward two men were wounded.

"In Lester's attempt to move the men to safety he was killed instantly by Jap machine gunfire. He carried out his mission unselfishly with no thought of personal safety."

Miner entered the Marines Sept. 24, 1943, at the age of 18. He had fought through the entire Siapan engagement without a scratch.

A native of North Century, he attended grade school there and was graduated from Picher high school. He is survived by his mother, who formerly lived at Bonaparte, Iowa, and three brothers, Carl of Jefferson City, Mo., and Willard and Dean, both of North Century, Okla.
