Dr. J.E. Nixon Dies At His Home

Dr. J.E. Nixon, widely known veterinarian and civic leader of this community, passed away quietly in his sleep Monday morning March 13 at the age of 55years, 11 months and nine days. His death was discovered by his wife at 7:15 in the morning. Dr. Nixon had been in poor health since last June when he suffered a severed heart attack. He had another attack several weeks ago. Since then he had been confined to his bed of rest and treatment.

Dr. Nixon had taken an active part in the community since coming here in 1925. He served three terms as clerk on the grade school board of education and several terms on the city council. He was an active member of the American Legion. His loss is greatly felt by all.

Jay Earl Nixon was born April 4, 1888 and died March 13, 1944. He was born on a farm three miles east of Oxford (where Ray Martin now lives,) the son of Jacob and Barbara Nixon. His mother died when he was five years old and he made his home with his grandmother Nixon. He graduated from the Kansas City, Mo., in 1916. As a young man he united with the Baptist Church at Utica, Iowa.

He was a lieutenant during the World War I and served as meat and food inspector at Battle Creek, Mich. On April 9, 1919, he located at Unionville, Iowa to begin his veterinary practice and stayed there until 1925, when he moved to Oxford and practiced here until his death.

Dr. Nixon was married August 21, 1918 at Chicago, Ill., to Veda Hasty of Lamar, Colo. To this union were born four children, Barbara, Helen, Earline and Jimmy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and sisters and a daughter Earline. He leaves his wife Veda and three children, Barbara, Helen and Jimmy; two brothers, Scott of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Ellison of Kake, Alaska.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 from the Oxford Methodist Church, with Rev. M.W. Williams officiating.

Musical numbers of the service were "Looking Beyond," a duet by Miss Lelia May Williams and Dr. C.A. Kinkaid and "Oh Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go," solo by Dr. Kinkaid. They were accompanied by Mrs. Howard Wenrich.

Pallbearers were Chester Dunn, Eugene Donley, Theron Beaman, Otto Wenrich, Bill Conover, and Bert Barnes. Burial was made in the Oxford cemetery. Oliver's Mortuary was in charge.
