A.H. McCrary was born February 23rd, 1814, in Vanderbaugh county, Indiana. Emigrated west in 1835, stopped in McDonough county, Illinois, until in the fall of 1836, then came to Van Buren county, Iowa. Made his claim just below Keosauqua. Returned and moved family here in 1837. The following July Iowa was organized as a territory. Bro. McCrary was elected justice of the peace of his (Vernon) township, which office he filled 'till 1848, when he was elected to represent the people in the legislature, serving in all including both houses, twelve years. It was here that the energies of this good man were so utilized in behalf of the rights and happiness of his constituency, that we are today reaping the benefits of his unselfish work in the interest of the constitutional rights of the citizens of the state. We are of slow to realize the hardship and the privation through which these old pioneers necessarily passed during the formation period of the history of the state's infantile development. It was his lot to struggle with the slavery question and he helped in controlling its extension into this domain. He has filled every position accorded, as neighbor, as Christian, as friend, and as a public servant, to the eminent satisfaction of the people, the universal verdict being, "A good man has fallen." What more could be said. On Thursday, April 14, 1898, the pure soul of our dear brother McCrary went home to heaven. This church and community are called upon to say farewell to one who for many years has gone in and out among them. One against whom no words of censure are spoken. One who has merited the friendship of the universal mind. One who for many, many years has been a devout follower of Him who said: "I am the way, the truth and the life."
