Alexander Peden Craig was born in County Down, Ireland, in August, 1825, and came to America in November, 1847. After living one winter in the state of New York, he came to Van Buren county, Iowa in 1848, and has resided on his farm about two miles north of Pittsburg. On February 21, 1896, he was enjoying reasonably good health, eating a hearty dinner, but was overtaken by death about one and a half hours afterwards. On February 3, 1858, he was married to Hessie Isabella Brown, who passed to the better land September 15, 1894. They were the parents of seven children, one of whom, Elsie, passed over the river August 11, 1881. The remaining six, W.B. of Clarinda, Iowa, Mrs. A.I. Pettit of Mt. Sterling, Iowa, John A., who lives on a farm near the old homestead, and James, Mary G. and Lizzie, who still live at home, mourn the loss of a kind father, who always set before his family a Godly example and taught them the ways of truth and righteousness. For years he was a faithful member of the U.P. church and for about five years an elder of that congregation at Birmingham, Iowa. Ever a faithful worker in his Master's cause, he superintended a S.S. at the school house in his district for a long time. By his every day loyalty to God and his integrity in dealing with his fellow creatures he has exerted a strong influence for righteousness. Having lived the life of the just he died with his hopes firmly foxed on his Savior. A large number of sympathizing and sorrowing friends and neighbors were present at the funeral which was held at the home at 1 o'clock, Sunday, Feb. 23, 1896, services conducted by Rev. Hiram Gilbert. The remains were laid to rest in the Pittsburg cemetery.
