ANOTHER OLD SETTLER GONE
Stephen D. Fellows Passed Away Wednesday

A MOST PROMINENT CITIZEN
Moved to Fairfield About Three Years Ago - Funeral to Be Here Saturday at 9 a.m.

Stephen Fellows who was a resident of Van Buren County, near Keosauqua for 79 years less the three or four years he had resided at Fairfield died suddenly Wednesday January 19, aged 82 years. His funeral was held here at 2:00 P.M. today (Friday).

Mr. Fellows who had been as well as usual, arose Wednesday morning at 6:00 o'clock. He went back to bed and apparently went to sleep. Later Mrs. Fellows, on trying to awaken him discovered he was unconscious. A physician was summoned and found Mr. Fellows was suffering from an attack of apoplexy.

At 12:40 P.M. without regaining consciousness, he passed away.

Mr. Fellows had been one of the prominent and leading citizens of Van Buren County for fifty years. He had cleared improved a farm of 452 acres a mile down the river from Keosauqua and was a successful and progressive farmer. He always took an active interest in public affairs. At institutes and public meetings of all kinds he was always present and took a leading part in the discussions and deliberations, and he always had some thing to say that was worth saying and hearing.

Politically he was always a democrat, and had been his party's candidate for county treasurer and for member of the General Assembly.

He was a prominent Oddfellow and Mason, having held the highest positions in both those orders here. His opinions were always sought in regard to all matters of public concern. He had no petty vices, his example and influence always being for the best.

He was one of the best citizens in every respect.

Stephen D. Fellows was born in Luzerne County Penn October 3rd, 1833. He came with his parents to this county in November, 1836. About three years ago he moved to Fairfield. In 1862 he was united in marriage to Miss Ann Bowman. There were eight children of whom seven are living. George lives in North Dakota; Allen in California; Grant, Thomas Keo in Chicago and Lee in Keosauqua.

As another has written of him, his public and private life were alike above reproach and his name was honored throughout the community.
