E. Kendall Roberts 1922-2016

E. Kendall Roberts, 94, of Keosauqua, died September 4, 2016, at Jefferson County Health Center. He was born March 1, 1922, in Albia to Clyde and June Watkins Roberts. He married Dorothy Esther Siemon on June 14, 1944, in Fairfield and they celebrated 70 years of marriage in 2014. She died July 16, 2014.

Kendall was a 1941 graduate of Albia High School. He and his family moved to Keosauqua where they operated the Roberts Super Valu grocery store. He served in the United States Armed Forces from 1942-1946 with active duty in the European Theater. He was employed by the Van Buren County Farm Service upon returning from the war. In 1958 he started employment for the Iowa Department of Transportation from which he retired in 1985 as maintenance supervisor. Ken was a firemanship training instructor for Iowa State College, Ames, for 12 years and a Red Cross first aid instructor for 46 years. He was a proud blood donor of 12 /2 gallons for the Red Cross. After retirement from the DOT. Kendall assisted Robert Pedrick at the funeral home. Kendall was a lifetime member of the Keosauqua Christian Church serving in numerous offices. He was a 71-year member of the Beer-Barker Post No.113, American Legion in Keosauqua having been awarded a lifetime membership from his post. He served as First District Commander and State Department Vice Commander. He was a member of the Van Buren County Safety Committee, Van Buren County Farm Bureau, Keosauqua Commercial Club and was county chairman of the United Fund of Iowa. He served on the Keosauqua Volunteer Fire Department for 39 years and was the fire chief for 25 years. While the special hobby that he enjoyed for years was golfing, his favorite activity was cheering on his grandchildren in their sports activities and spending time with his family.

Surviving are his children, Paul Roberts (Becky), Maureen Sedlacek (Mark) and Gloria Sprouse (Rod) all of Keosauqua, and Alan Roberts (Sue) of Mountain Home, ID, 14 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother James Roberts.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 9, 2016, at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua, with Rev. Ron Follmer officiating. Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family present from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in Fellows Cemetery, Keosauqua, with military rites by Beer-Barker Post No. 113.
