DAVID A. MILLER

David Albert Miller, son of Oliver and Charlotte Miller, was born near Kittanning, Pennsylvania, 82 years ago the 27th of last September.

In 1868, at the age of thirteen, he came with his parents to Iowa and settled in Birmingham. In 1875, at the age of 19, he went to California where he spent four years of his life. He returned in 1878 and in 1879 made two trips to Kansas in a prairie schooner. On the second trip he was accompanied by his parents and settled on a homestead in Jewell county.

In the winter of 1879 he again returned to Iowa where he was united in marriage to Mary M. Spees and settled on the old Miller farm east of Birmingham where they resided almost forty years before moving to Birmingham.

Mr. Miller was a member of one of the best known families in the vicinity. He was a successful farmer and always took an active interest in all of the affairs of the community, having served as president of the bank, and was a member of the school board for 26 consecutive years. In spite of his years he retained an active interest in the happenings of the day.

He is survived by his wife, Mary M. and the following children: Mrs. Jurenia Whittlesey, Albert C., Charlotte M., Quay and Mrs. Ethel Johnston, all of Birmingham, and Rose S. of Ottumwa. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The funeral services were held at the family home at two o'clock Sunday afternoon with the Rev. F.M. James of the Methodist church officiating. Music was furnished by the William Brothers and John Wilson, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Glen Williams. The six grandchildren, Verne Whittlesey, Albert Whittlesey, David M. Miller, Rex Johnston, Maurice Miller and Dale Miller acted as pall bearers when their grandfather was laid to rest in the Maple Hill cemetery.
