Samuel Harrison Reed

Was born in Garrit County, Kentucky, Aug. 15, 1844, and died at his home in Keosauqua, Iowa, March 25, 1921, aged 76 years, 7 months and 10 days. He was married in 1864 to Miss Julia Hubble and to that union were born six children, of whom four are lving and two passed away a few years ago. After the death of his wife he married his present widow, who was Miss Catherine Brown. For some years Mr. Reed was a local preacher and held his membership with the Baptist church of Ottumwa. A few years ago he moved to Keosauqua and united with the colored Baptist church here. He was an ardent christian, a deligent worker and defender of his race. He preached many sermons to his people here, and was respected by all our people as a citizen and christian. He must also be credited as a soldier of the Civil War and fought side by side with the white soldiers. His flag was Old Glory for which he fought. His suffering was severe, but of short duration. Funeral services were held from the colored M. E. church, conducted by Rev. J. C. Caughlan of the M. E. church. Burial was in the purdom cemetery.

His wife and a son desire to extend thanks to their neighbors and friends for their kindness and sympathy in their bereavement and sorrow.
