DEATH OF THOS. FORBES.
Demise After Operation at Ottumwa.

The people of this community were shocked Monday of his week on receipt of the news of the death of Thomas Forbes, formerly residing about three miles southwest of here. Mr. Forbes' death took place at 2 o'clock Monday at Ottumwa, where he went April 14 to submit to a surgical operation for a tumor at the neck of the bladder. The operation was performed April 16, and his death occurred 14 days there after. It was scarcely known here that Mr. Forbes contemplated having an operation performed or that he was in Ottumwa. The cause of death is given in the death certificate as uremia, from which the deceased had been a sufferer for four or five years.

Mr. Forbes was one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of this section. He was a perfectly upright man and possessed in the fullest degree the confidence and good will of all who knew him.

Mr. Forbes was born in Pennsylvania Oct. 19, 1841, being in the 70th years of his age. He came with his parents to this county at an early age and always resided here. His mother was a half sister of Robert Forbes, Sr., deceased. He married to Miss Susanna Barker, a sister of James C. Barker of near Mt. Zion. His widow and two sons and two daughters survive him. One son, Jos. C. resides at Milton and John W. lives at Rock Island. One daughter, Mrs. James Morrison, resides near Pittsburg and the other, Mrs. Frank Helsel, resides at Ames, Ia., where her husband is attending the state college.

The body arrived from Ottumwa Tuesday and was taken to the home of Mrs. Morrison. The funeral was held in the Presbyterian church at Mt. Zion yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, being conducted by the Presbyterian minister at Lebanon.
