Obituary of Adolphus Curtis

Adolphus Curtis was born at Waterford, Ohio, December 21, 1837, eldest son of Tholemiah and Avis Curtis. He came to Hannibal, Mo., in 1841 with the family on their way to Iowa, but they were there detained by ice in the river. In January, 1842, they completed their journey and located on a farm northwest of Farmington, on or near which he made his home for over seventy-five years. He was married to Miss Susan Weekly in 1860. To them was born one son, T. Scott Cutis. The mother died in March, 1862, and the son was reared to manhood by his grandparents. In 1871 Mr. Curtis was married to Miss Mariah Dana of Farmington, Iowa, who died July 25, 1917. Since that time Mr. Curtis made his home with is sister, Miss Helen Curtis. His sickness began about one year ago and increased in severity; two months it took a critical turn and the skill of the physician could only delay the approach of dissolution. He was cheerfully and carefully nursed by his sister Helen, aided in the past month by his son T. Scott Curtis of Guthrie, Okla., who remained to cheer his last moments. Death came to him peacefully and restfully at 2 a.m., Oct. 27th, 1918, at the age of 80 years, 10 months and 6 days. He leaves his son T. Scott Curtis and a sister Miss Helen Curtis to mourn their lonely lot, besides kind neighbors and many friends. Mr. Curtis was of the pioneer stock and helped to transform the wilderness of the past into the fruitful farms and pleasant homes of the present. He was an industrious, thrifty, successful farmer, a loyal, upright citizen. Funeral services at the Curtis home opposite Farmington, Iowa, at 2 p.m., Oct. 29, 1918, Elder James McKiernan in charge. Interment in city cemetery.
