OBITUARY.

John Horton Grosvenor Gilbert, oldest son of John Wesley and Sadie Horton Gilbert, was born July 20, 1892, near Kilbourne, Ia., and died Aug. 18, 1907, at 3216 West 18th Street Kansas City, Mo., of Mastoid abscess, being 15 years 23 days old at the time of his death. Grovie, as he was called, was of a cheerful disposition and always found greatest pleasure in trying to please his friends. He was a great reader, as he had access to the public library. His hearing being defective made him love to read the more. He had passed the 8th grade at school, but on account of his deafness did not attend school the last year.

At the time he was taken sick he was District messenger boy for the Western Union Telegraph Co. As he realized that he was approaching the "Valley of the Shadow of Death", he called for the Bible and turning to John, xiv chapter, read the first seven verses, and becoming tired, he placed it under his pillow saying to his mother, "I will finish it in the morning." But the morning was to him eternity.

His funeral was conducted at the Kilbourne church Aug. 20 by Rev. W.H. Jones of Bonaparte assisted by Rev. G.L. Minear of Mt. Pleasant. He leaves to mourn their loss, his mother, one brother, and aged grand mother, besides other relatives and friends. His father died Feb. 9, 1899. There were many beautiful floral offerings, from friends here and at Kansas City.
