OLD PRINTER GONE.

Sudden Death of Old Uncle Joe Bounds.

A.L. Bounds, a veteran printer, quite well known at Keosauqua as "Uncle Joe," died at La Belle, Lewis county, Mo., a few days since. For the past two or three years uncle Joe had been publishing the Rutledge Record. A few months ago his health broke down, and he went to a hospital, and had been employed by a paper at La Belle about ten days, when he was found dead in his room at the Wood hotel.

Uncle Joe was probably the oldest working printer in the country. He first came to the Democrat in 1874, and was surely between 50 and 60 years old at the time. He was with us again 22 years later, in 1896. We have heard him relate often how, when he was employed in a newspapea(err) office at Brunswick, Mo., he met Thomas H. Benton at the steamboat landing and carried his grip up town. It was while Benton was a member of the senate, and was probably in 1844 - over 60 years ago. We are satisfied Uncle Joe was upwards of 80, although his age is given by the LaBelle papers as 72 or 73. But he was an upright, faithful and good man, and in his younger days was an excellent printer. Peace to his ashes.
