James R. Ward

James Rex Ward, son of Noah and Amy Ward, died Jan. 18, 1960, in Chicago of a heart attack.

He was born on a farm near Bonaparte, Iowa on Aug. 12, 1901, and spent his entire boyhood in this vicinity. He attended the country schools and the Bonaparte High School.

He worked in several jobs around the vicinity mostly in the mechanics line. He operated a large steam engine which run a saw mill owned by O.L. Bostock, went with a threshing and clover hulling crew and any work found around the farm.

To further his education, he first took a course at Sweeny Auto School in Kansas City, Mo. Later he went to Business College at Ft. Madison and studied Business Management. Upon completion of this, in 1925, he went to Chicago, Ill., where his employment was with a Bakery and a Sewing Machine Manufacturer, until 1930, at which time Jim joined the Popular Mechanic firm. He was shop Notes and Crafts editor, and headed the Do-It-Yourself editorial section of the magazine since 1945.

Jim edited several books, all based on the theme of do-it-yourself and was listed in the 1959 Commerce and Industrials Who's Who.

Among Jims many hobbies was culture of Roses and flowers, also he liked to build as many of the do-it-yourself ideas in his home workshop as he possibly could, to see it they were practical and useful.

Jim was known and respected by Editors all over the U.S. for his views and comments of do-it-yourself atricals(sp) and ideas.
