Rachel Stebbins.
Rachel Ann Barteaw was born in Hamilton Co., Ohio, March 2, 1842, and died at Bonaparte, Iowa, Nov. 2, 1911.
The daughter of pioneers, she came with her parents at an early age to Iowa, making the journey by flat boat down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to Alexandria, then over land to the trading post of Independence, now the town of Kilbourne.
When a young woman, the family removed to Utica, Iowa, where she was married to Sydney Stebbins on March 24, 1860. The result of this union was ten children, three of whom died in infancy.
The daughter of Christian parents, and herself converted at an early age, she exemplified in her daily life those attributes of Christian character endearing her alike to family and friends. Devotion to home and children was her predominant characteristic. An invalid for the past several years, she maintained her happy, hopeful disposition to the last, and her death was simply a falling asleep.
An invalid husband, an aged sister, and seven children survive: Thomas A. of Ft. Madison, Iowa; Hiram G. of Keokuk; Mrs. Lloyd Bennett of Decatur, Ill.; Mrs. James Cantril of West Point, Iowa; Margaret B. of New York City; and March C. and Charles of Bonaparte.
A woman of broad sympathies; refined and tender sensibilities; in temperament calm yet resolute; of a happy and loving disposition, she will be greatly missed by her family and a large circle of friends to whom her life was a benediction.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the home, Rev. T. L. Smith officiating. The sons and sons-in-law acted as pall bearers, and interment was made in Bonaparte cemetery.
