LEE EDWARD JOHNSTON

Lee Edward Johnston, former Fairfield resident who never recovered from injuries he received in an auto accident more than a year ago, died at 9 p.m. last night at the University hospital in Iowa City.

His condition had been serious most of the time since the accident and he entered the hospital the last time on May 1, this year.

Both Johnston and his wife were seriously injured in a head-on crash near New London on May 11, 1951. Mrs. Johnston is now recovering from her injuries but her husband hadn't been well since the crash and had spent considerable time in the hospital.

He was born Oct. 19, 1918, at Stockport, Iowa, the son of Jay and Mary Goodwin Johnston. He was united in marriage on Feb. 25, 1940, to Mary Roach. The wedding took place at Fairfield.

The couple moved to Burlington in November, 1950, where he was an inspector for the Case company. Johnston was a member of the Lutheran church.

He is survived by his widow and three children, Kenneth Lee, 11; Judith Ann, 9; and Stephen Dean, 4. He is also survived by his parents, who reside in Fairfield, and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Ed Leu, Mt. Pleasant; Mrs. Don Frazier, Fairfield; Mrs. Ruth Slocum, Burlington; Mrs. Wilma Smith, Stockport; Mrs. Gene Cundy, Omaha; Mrs. John Arndt, Fairfield; Mrs. Darrell Hoffman, Des Moines; Jay, Jr., Amarillo, Tex., and Janette, at home.
