MRS. JOHN BROWN.

Eliza Craig was born in the county of Down, Ireland, in 1831. In 1847 she with a brother and two sisters, emigrated to the United States, and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in 1850 to Van Buren county, Iowa, her home until her decease. February 22, 1860, she was married to John Brown. To this union was born six children: James, who died in Sumner county, Kansas, September 26, 1887, Lizzie and Sarah who are living in Oklahoma, Mary and Hester, who resides in Van Buren county, and William in Idaho. Mrs. Brown had not been in good health for some time, bordering on nervous prostration. During an electric storm on the evening of May 21st, she was attacked by apoplexy and lingering in unconsciousness until the following morning, died at three o'clock, notwithstanding medical aid and good nursing had been diligently applied. She passed away without a struggle and in great peace at the age of 71. Sister Brown united with the Presbyterian church in Ireland and remained a faithful member of that church. She attended worship at sister churches when not in reach of her own and enjoyed the service of God's house wherever her lot was cast. She was a devout, spiritual minded, Christian woman, whose conversation betrayed the foremost subject upon her mind, namely, religion and the Holy Scriptures. These were her themes. No one could be in her presence long, or converse with her but a short time, before she would introduce these subjects. As a neighbor, wife and mother, she was what might be expected, a true, lovely, kind and noble woman, who held the respect of all who knew her. Her life and death point to her future, to which she looked forward with a longing, anxious, and yet resigned, soul. She has left an unmistakable evidence of her now enjoying the life of the saints in rest. The funeral services were held by Rev. Boyd, assisted by Rev. Perkins, and many friends were in attendance. The body was laid to rest in Purdom cemetery. The floral decorations from the friends, neighbors and old acquaintances were beautiful and expensive. Mr. Brown, the husband, greatly feels his loss, as do the children, relatives and friends, but are resigned to the will of God. They have the sympathy of the large circle of their friends.
