Enid Eunice Allen, 89, of Carthage, passed away at 10:11 PM. Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at the Great River Hospice House in Burlington, IA.
Enid was born August 22, 1926, in rural Burnside, IL, the daughter of Charles Lowell and Linnie Astoria L. (Wieder) Martin. She attended three years of high school in Burnside and graduated from Carthage High School in 1945. She then went on to receive her certificate in nursing from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Peoria, IL. On August 31, 1948, she was united in marriage to Gilbert Allen in Burnside. He preceded her in death in 1986. Enid was a nurse at Memorial Hospital from the day it opened and was on the first night shift when the first baby was born. She later served as the school nurse for Robert Morris College, Hamilton High School, and Sycamore Healthcare in Quincy. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carthage, the Delvers Club and helped with the local food pantry. Enid was an avid baseball fan, especially of Illini West baseball.
Enid is survived by her children, Pamela Enid (Paul) Larson and Tom Allen, both of Keosauqua, IA; grandchildren, Chris Huston, Jen (Ryan) Van Horn, Zak (Rachel) Huston, Griffin Larson and Isabel Allen; step-grandchild, Marcos Larson; great-grandchildren, Emmy and Abbie Van Horn, Claire, Gwen, and Luke Huston; step-great -grandchild, Storm Larson; and former son-in-law, John (Sherry) Huston and their son, Reeves, of Carthage.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gilbert; a son, Martin Robert Allen in 1952; brothers, Paul, Richard, and John Martin; and a sister, Marion Martin.
Funeral services were held July 3, 2016, at the First Baptist Church in Carthage with burial afterwards in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.
Printy Funeral Home of Carthage was in charge of arrangements.
