Mabel M. Wells, 98, of Keosauqua, died May 11, 2016, at Van Buren County Hospital, Keosauqua. was born July 2, 1917, in rural Keosauqua to Benjamin and Dott Roush Whitcanack and married Everett L. Wells May 8, 1938, at her parents’ home near Keosauqua. Mr. Wells died November 9, 1975.

Mabel graduated from Keosauqua High School. She and her husband farmed in Van Buren County and served many years as comanagers of Cerro Gordo County Care Facility in Mason City. They retired to Birmingham in 1975 and she moved to Keosauqua 20 years ago.

Mabel was an active member of Keosauqua Christian Church and Christian Women's Fellowship and had been in Eastern Star.

Surviving are a son, Kriss Wells (Martha Easter-Wells) of LeClaire, IA, two grandchildren, Linda Wells (Tim Phillips) of Minneapolis, MN, and Austin Wells (Shanna Fatica) of Mentor, OH, three great-grandchildren, Mabel, Josie and Theo, a brother, Earl Whitcanack (Leona), and a sister Betty Hendricks (Glen), all of Keosauqua, other relatives and many friends.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Wells, three brothers, Harold and Karl Whitcanack in childhood and Rex Whitcanack, and two sisters, Pauline Shipley and Frances Dodds.

Funeral services were held on May 14, 2016, in Keosauqua Christian Church with Rev Bill Shewmaker officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cantril. Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua assisted the family with arrangements.
