George V. Simmons, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. David Simmons, was born near Milton, Iowa, December 1st, 1858, and died at his home in Bonaparte, Sunday, April 18th, 1915 at 3:39 p.m., aged 58 years, 4 months and 18 days.
He was married to Lucy Eastman April 30th, 1890. Of this union three children were born, two dying in infancy, the only daughter, Linda, living and at home.
Mr. Simmons was converted at Des Moines February 27th, 1891, and united with the Christian Church of that city. He worked as an agent for 25 years on the Rock Island and Northwestern railroads. Mr. and Mrs. Simmons lived for years at Gowrie and Paton, then at Des Moines.
Mr. Simmons suffered from a stroke of paralysis six years ago at Des Moines and has had one each year since, and two this year. His general health apart from the strokes was fairly good. He bore his affliction with great patience and submission to God’s will, firmly believing that the Lord is too wise to make a mistake, and too good to allow His children to be afflicted without a special purpose. Mr. Simmons was always active in church work. He loved the prayer meeting and all religious services and found his chief pleasure and delight, not in the vanities on this world, but in the realities of “the things above.” Mr. and Mrs. Simmons moved from Des Moines to their farm on Vernon Prairie six years ago, where they resided until they came to Bonaparte, a little over a year ago. Mr. Simmons was a good man, a genuine Christian and was ready for the call of the Bridegroom when it came.
The funeral service was first held at the home conducted by the Rev. L.T. Hughes, and later at Story Chapel, Rev. Wilson preaching the sermon. We extend our heartiest and sincerest sympathy to Mrs. Simmons and Miss Linda; the brother and sister of the departed; and may the Good Shepherd lead them to the green pastures, beside the still waters.
