Obituary of C.Y. Hope

Clarence Yulando Hope, second son of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Hope, was born in Birmingham, Iowa, April 6, 1973, and died in Chariton, Iowa, February 13, 1923, at the age of 49 years, 10 months and 7 days.

His early boyhood days were spent in Birmingham until 1891, when he began working on the railroad which has since been his occupation.

August 26, 1891, he was united in marriage with Miss Anna Glotfelty, to whom were born two children, Hazel and Ruth, the latter dying in infancy. The wife died May 18, 1917. He was again married, November 28, 1922, to Mrs. Jessie Avitt. He is survived by the wife and daughter Hazel; mother, Mrs. W.H. Hope; three sisters, Mrs. Dap Byers, Valley Junction, Iowa; Mrs. Lida Conlee, Denver, Co.; Mrs. Kate Corry, Birmingham, Iowa; one brother, M.D. Hope, Birmingham.

On Sunday, February 4th, while in the line of duty, he was seriously injured in a railroad wreck, and while he received the best medical attention and the constant care of loving hands, he passed away on February 13th.

He was converted when a young man and joined the Presbyterian church in Birmingham. He was a member of the Masonic order of Valley Junction, Iowa, Odd Fellows and Rebekas, and Knights and Ladies of Security of Chariton, Iowa.

Clarence was a kind husband and loving father, and will be sadly missed in the broken home circle, among his many acquaintances and railroad associates, as well as the old friends of his boyhood home.

Short services were held at the home in Chariton on Wednesday morning, the 14th, and on Thursday afternoon at 2:30, services were held in Birmingham at the home of his brother M.D. Hope, conducted by Rev. J.L. Coleman of the Presbyterian church. The Masons served as pallbearers and had charge of the service at the grave. The interment was in the Maple Hill cemetery.
----------
We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to our many friends and neighbors, the Masonic Ordrers, Eastern Star, Odd Fellows, Rebekas, Knights and Ladies of Security, O.R.C., B. of R.T., P.E.O. for their kindness and sympathy, and also the beautiful floral offerings, during the illness and death of our dear one.
