Death of Charles Skinner

The following sketch was taken from the Owens Valley, California, Herald. Charley was born and raised in Van Buren County, Iowa, the old Skinner home being the farm two miles south of Birmingham, now owned by Amos Watts. He was one of the few surviving members of Company H, Third Iowa Cavalry in the Civil War, which was raised in Van Buren County. His early life was spent here, but has been a resident of California for many years:

Charles A. Skinner, one of the most highly respected residents of this community, passed away at the home of his niece, Mrs. Jessie MacIver, last Friday afternoon, Aug. 24. Mr. Skinner was born Sept. 1840, being near 82 years of age.

He was one of the early settlers of Inyo County and a brother of the late J.V. Skinner of Lone Pine. In early days he owned a ranch at Georgia Creek and was interested in other property in the southern part of Owens Valley. He served throughout the Civil War in the Union Army and was one of the G.A.R. in this county. About fifteen years ago he came to Bishop and since that time has made his home with Mrs. MacIver. Mr. Skinner never married.

He leaves to mourn their loss two brothers: Dr. G.N. Skinner, Winterset, Iowa; Dick Skinner, Kilbourne, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. H.C. Skinner of Parkfield, Calif.; also a number of nephews and nieces.

He was a man who numbered among his friends all who had the the fortune to know him. Absolutely above reproach in every way, and it can truly be said that his passing the world lost a genuinely good man.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church here which he was faithful member, Saturday morning, and then the remains were taken to Independence for interment, the serylies(services) there being conducted by the Women's Relief Corps and the American Legion.
