Obituary of Mrs. Shaffer.

Mrs. Nancy Johnston Shaffer was born March 16, 1835, and passed away at the home of her adopted son, Stephen A. Shaffer in Ottumwa, Dec. 15, 1911, aged 76 years, 8 months, and 29 days. On May 5, 1853, she was married to H.Q. Shaffer, who died eight years ago. They had no children of their own, but an adopted son, Stephen A. Shaffer, who, with a grandson, brother and a number of other relatives survive her. As a wife and mother she was a devoted, as a sister, loving, kind and true, as a neighbor, honorable and upright. She came to Van Buren county over 65 years ago, and lived near Kilbourne until two years since, when she moved to Ottumwa. The funeral was held Monday, Dec. 18, 1911, at White Chapel about five miles northeast of Douds, and the remains laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery, the Rev. Elmer C. Sandmeyer, of Douds, conducting the services.
