Josiah Martin

Josiah Martin was born in Fayette county, Ohio, November 18, 1844 and departed this life at his home in Birmingham, Iowa, aged 76 years, 3 months and three days.

He came with his parents to Davis county, Iowa, when about twelve years of age. He was united in marriage to Sarah E. Lawson, December 17, 1855, and to this union were born six children, the wife and three children preceding him in death. All of his married life has been spent in Jefferson and Van Buren counties.

There remains to mourn his loss, one son Clarence of Fairfield, Iowa, two daughters, Mrs. Joe Wilson of Fairfield, and Miss Zora of Birmingham. Also four sisters, Mrs. Sarah Reneker of near Douds, Mrs. Mary Filmore of San Jose, Cal. Mrs. Jane Stump of Leon, Iowa, Mrs. Harriet Stump of Libertyville, Iowa; one brother, George Martin of Bentonsport, Iowa; Ten grandchildren, the oldest, Lee Brannan, who gave his life while in active service of the U.S. Army in the World War.

He enlisted in the 17th, Iowa Infantry at Iowaville in March, 1862, giving three years, three months and three days unselfish service to his country. He was a member of the Grand Army Post of Fairfield.

The funeral service was held at the M.E. church on Saturday afternoon, the 17th, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.L. Coleman of the Presbyterian church, and the body laid to rest beside his wife in the Maple Hill cemetery, who preceded him only five weeks.
