Death of Samuel Hearne

Samuel Herne, a native and the greater part of his life a resident of Keosauqua, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Col. Brookhart in Washington, Iowa; Friday afternoon. His age was 79 years, 5 months and 18 days.

A funeral service was held Sunday at 4 o'clock, at the Brookhart home, conducted by Rev. M. Glendinning and at its conclusion the funeral party took up the journey to Keosauqua, where at 10:30 Monday morning a service was held in the Methodist church, in charge of Rev. C.E. Perkins of the Congregational church.

The Washington Evening Journal of Saturday printed a highly appreciative sketch of and tribute to the character of Mr. Hearne, who was a man of the highest and purest qualities of mind and heart. He had lived in Washington nearly seventeen years, long enough to be known to the people of that city generally, and to make his mark as friend, neighbor and citizen.

Mr. Hearne is survived by four children, viz: Mrs. S.W. Brookhart of Washington; Edward Hearne, Boston; Charles Hearne of Panama; and Mrs. Alma Hearne Holland, a missionary in India. The two first named were present at the services in Keosauqua. A sister, Mrs. Martha Wright and a brother, John Hearne of Birmingham, are among the surviving relatives. Mrs. Hearne died about 23 years ago. Samuel Hearne was one of the rapidly thinning ranks of veterans of the Civil War, having served over three years in Co. F, Second Iowa Infantry. He was in numerous battles, among them being the great engagements of Fort Donelson, Shiloh and Corinth. In one of these battles he was wounded.

In early life Mr. Hearne united with the Methodist Episcopal church of which all his life he was a faithful and devoted member. The Washington paper calls attention to the fact that all his children are engaged to work for humanity; Mrs. Holland being, as already stated a missionary; Edward Hearne being prominently identified with work in the Y.M.C.A., holding the office of state secretary for Massachusetts and at present engaged in looking after the activities of that excellent organization in the military camps of New England; and Charles Hearne being quarantine officer at Panama; while Mrs. Brookhart is know for her efficient interest in every good undertaking. The burial was in Purdom cemetery.
