Jane Ellen Matheson

Jane Ellen, daughter of Thomas A. and Rebecca McIntosh, was born Feb. 6, 1866 in a log cabin on the homestead of her parents near Center Chapel and passed away at Keosauqua, Iowa, Dec. 4, 1950, aged 84 years, 9 months, 28 days. Of the four brothers and three sisters, two sisters, Mary L. Newnan of Mountainview, Calif. and Rose Anson of Bakersfield, Calif., survive.

On Feb. 15, 1894 Jane Ellen McIntosh and George A. Matheson were united in marriage at the home of her parents and to this union three children were born: Hugh E. of Keosauqua, Letha Fowler of Sanford, Fla., and Sylva Steele of Wyaconda, Mo., and they with five grandchildren, one great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews survive, the husband having passed away in 1936.

Jane was a home loving person and her entire life interest has been centered around her home and the Center Chapel community, she having been a member of the Center Chapel church since early girlhood. When a young lady she and her sister Mary and two brothers went to California and homesteaded, but after the marriage of her sister she became homesick and returned to her home in Iowa and except for a short time after her marriage when she and her husband lived on Vernon Prairie, and several years she spent in the home of her daughter in Florida, her entire life was lived on the farm her parents homesteaded. She had been ill for many months but had been uncomplaining and ready for the last call.

Funeral services in charge of her pastor, the Rev. Burton C. Bastuscheck, were held in the Center Chapel church on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 6, at 2 o’clock. Burial was in the Center Chapel cemetery.
