OVERMAN, VARNER, BAKER, HORN, LEE

W.C. Overman of Ottumwa, brother of J.M. Overman, and uncle Roy and Miss Bess Overman of Keosauqua, passed away at his home in Ottumwa last Thursday morning, January 25, at 7:15. Mr. Overman had been ill since last July, but had retired from active business five months before.

The funeral services were held from the home at 2:30 Sunday afternoon in charge of Rev. Harold Lancaster, pastor of the First M.E. church of Ottumwa. Burial was made in the Ottumwa cemetery.

Mr. Overman spent almost his entire life in Keosauqua up to 1902, at which time he moved with is family to Ottumwa where he was employed by the J.G. Hutchison Co. He later entered the candy business, after which he re-entered the Hutchison company where in 1910 he was made manager. He served in this capacity until 1924. Half of the intervening four years, between then and 1928, were spent in California, at the close of which time he returned to take up his duties in the company. He was advanced until the time of his retirement when he held the positions of vice president, general manager, and treasurer of the firm. For several years Mr. Overman had served as president of the Midwest Grocers' association, of which he was called the "father" because of his activities in connection with the organization of the association.

Hancock county, Illinois, is the place of Mr. Overman's birth which occurred on April 15, 1860. He was the son of Samuel and Nancy E. Overman, who came originally from North Carolina. The family came to Keosauqua about 1875.

At Keosauqua Mr. Overman was married to Carrie E. Varner. His wife and two daughters, Helen and Hazel, both at home, survive, as do his brother, J.M. Overman of Keosauqua, and a sister, Mrs. Fannie Baker of Polk City. He was preceded in death by one son, John Lee Overman; his parents and two sister, Mrs. Pauline Horn of Hillsboro and Mrs. Mary Lee of Denver, Colo.
