Rev. J.W. Potter Dies At Mt. Pleasant

Began Pastorate In Keosauqua 58 Years Ago; Burial to Be in Purdom Cemetery Today.

The Rev. Dr. John Wesley Potter died Sunday morning at his home in Mt. Pleasant following a short illness.

He was a retired Methodist minister having stared his first pastorate in Keosauqua 58 years ago. He later had charges at Kilbourne, Pittsburg, Cantril, Center Chapel, Bethel, Lebanon, Mt. Sterling and Milton. He also served many charges in Iowa, Indiana and the Dakotas.

For five years Rev. Potter was on the road doing evangelistic work, and he was platform manager at the chantauqua in Fairfield when it started and continued in that capacity for 20 years. During most of this time he served as a member of the Methodist council.

Surviving are his wife, Effie, who is seriously ill with pneumonia; one son, Dr. Robert Russell Potter, director of the department of arts and science at Columbia university, New York City; one daughter Mrs. Ruth Potter Adams of Oskaloosa, five grandchildren, and one brother-in-law, Attorney Robert R. McBeth of Keosauqua.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Mt. Pleasant Methodist church, in charge of the Rev. Dr. John W. Holland of Chicago. Following the services the body will be brought to Purdom cemetery at Keosauqua for interment. The committal services will be in charge of the Rev. T. Warren of Keosauqua at 4:30 o'clock.
