V. D. Carney Fatally Injured

Friday, January 25, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. L. Carney, south of Keosauqua, received the shocking news that their son Valentine D. Carney had passed away that morning from the effects of an accident, and Mr. Carney left at once for the sad home of the deceased near Charleston, Ill. The accident occurred at the weighing scales in Charleston, when Valentine’s team hitched to a sled loaded with furniture belonging to a neighbor who was moving, ran away and knocked him down under the horses heels where he was kicked and dragged, receiving many injuries. Examination showed a compound fracture of the left arm, a sever cut on his head, ribs crushed in close to the heart, besides severe bodily bruises.

The deceased was born May 6, 1890, and hence was in his 28th year when the summons came. He was united in marriage in 1915 and leaves a widow and two small children. He is also survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Carney, of near Keosauqua, and four sisters, viz.: Mrs. Lydia Polter, of Medero, Calif.; Dr. Mary J. Carney, of Mason City, Iowa; Mrs. Iska Duvall, south of Keosauqua, and Miss Margaret Carney at home. Funeral services and burial were on Sunday, Jan. 27. The many friends of the bereaved families sympathize with them in their great sorrow.
