John W. Kreiss Taken By Death

John Kreiss, long a familiar figure in Keosauqua affairs, died last Friday at 4 a.m.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. with burial in Purdom cemetery.

Mr. Kreiss was born in Council Grove, Kansas, December 10, 1874 and was approaching his 65th birthday at the time of his death.

On July 22, 1895, he was married to Lottie Miles. To this union nine children were born, Lawrence of Des Moines, Florence Brown of Cantril, Lottie Mae Bowen of Marshalltown, Lena DeHart of Fairfield, Edith Jamison, Joe, Bobbie and Beedie all of Keosauqua and Harold of Des Moines who preceded his father in death three months ago.

Mr. Kreiss is survived by his wife and eight children and two sisters, Mrs. B.J. Hough of Minneapolis and Mrs. D.A. Whiting of Des Moines.

Througout his life, Kriss took an active interest in politics and in municipal affairs, serving with the volunteer fire department and becoming known as Keosauqua's river expert. Knowing the currents and eddies of the river, Kreiss recovered two bodies of drowned persons after others had given up the search.

He was converted at a meeting held in Keosauqua by the Rev. L.K. Harper and became a member of the Methodist Church, serving as a member of the Board of Stewards.

The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church by the Rev. C.H. Orf.

Mr. Kreiss had been in downtown Keosauqua the day before his death, an incident typical of his insistence on "keeping going" until the last. Although he had suffered a stroke previously, he took work at the state capitol last winter which he was forced to abandon after another stroke.

He came to town regularly upon his return.
