John Henry Smutz, son of B.R. and Sarah Jane Smutz, was born near Hillsboro in Van Buren county, Iowa, Nov. 28, 1869, and passed away at his home in Lee county on Sunday morning , June 12, 1932, aged 62 years, 6 months and 1 day.
On March 10, 1891, he was united in marriage with Miss Cora McCracken of Van Buren county. They moved at once to the present homestead where they spent their entire married life.
This union was blessed with five children, Craig Randal of Hillsboro, Mrs. E.C. Smith of Salem, Harley Francis of Hillsboro, Ralph Henry of Burlington, and Mrs. D.D. Mosier of Colmar, Ill. They, with their mother, are left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father.
Besides the immediate family he leaves an aged father, B.R. Smutz, of Stockport, an invalid sister, Miss Lola Smutz of Hillsboro, and three brothers, Ray of Fairfield, Bert of Devils Lake, N. Dak., and Sam of Stockport, seven grandchildren and many others who mourn the passing of a friend and neighbor.
The deceased was a member of the Hillsboro Baptist church. Honest, sincere and just, he was loved by all who knew him.
Mr. Smutz was in his usual health until Monday noon, May 30, when he spoke of a severe headache. Soon after leaving the house he was found in an unconscious condition near his team and wagon. He was at once removed to the Memorial hospital, at Mt. Pleasant, where all that science and loving hands were capable of doing, was done.
On advice of the physicians he was taken to his home Monday afternoon, but the Master had called and though it is with aching hearts we humbly say, “Thy will be done.” Thus he passed, quietly and peacefully to his rest.
Funeral services were held at the Hillsboro Baptist church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. C.E. Strong officiating.
