Thomas Drummond Alfrey was born in Van Buren county, Iowa, near the town of Farmington Nov. 1, 1851, and passed away at his home in Mt. Sterling Nov. 19, 1930, at the age of 79 years and 18 days.
When a small child he moved with his mother to a farm in Missouri a short distance from Mt. Sterling, where he grew to manhood and later came to Mt. Sterling where he was employed as a clerk, which profession he followed as long as his health would permit.
He had the following men as his employers: James Alcorn, Bauman Pros., Marsh Tharp of Mt. Sterling, Geo. Moore of Bentonsport, the Farmington Mercantile Co. of Farmington, Kerr Bros, and Lloyd Shriver, also of Mt. Sterling. He was always found at his post of responsibility, ready and willing to serve the customers of his employers.
He was a member of the Masonic Order of Cantril, also I.O.O.F. lodge Mt. Sterling.
He was united in marriage to Mary Shanon April 5, 1875. To this union one son, Frank, was born. The mother passed away July 2, 1896, and the son April 10, 1904, at the age of 24 years.
On Oct. 9th, 1901, he was married to Mrs. Della Lorton DeHart. Besides his loving wife he leaves to mourn, two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Marriott of Bentonsport and Mrs. Amanda McCrary of Farmington, besides a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held in the Mt. Sterling M.E. church on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m., with interment in the Harness cemetery. Rev. John C. Porath of Fairfield had charge of the service.
