James William Gordon, son of Adam and Lyda Gordon, was born in Waynesburg, Pa., Sept. 19, 1856, and departed this life Feb. 5, 1932, aged 75 years, 4 months and 14 days.
His mother preceded him in death when he was six months old, leaving him to the tender care of his aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and S.R. Huss.
He came to Fairfield in the year 1876. He married Cora A. Vannatta Oct. 18, 1884. To this union were born seven children, one daughter, Ora E., dying in infancy.
With his family he moved to the farm near Bentonsport in 1910 where they have since resided.
He leaves to mourn their loss, four daughters, Mrs. Lydia Stansell of Fairfield, Mrs. Hazel Strah of Mt. Sterling, Mrs. Gail Rankin of Keosauqua, Mrs. Vannatta Grimes of St. Charles; two sons, James Clark of Bentonsport, and Wilson A. of Burlington. Nine grandchildren, one grandchild, Don Gordon, dying in infancy, and three brothers, all of Pennsylvania.
Apparently enjoying the best of health he was stricken and after a brief illness of 36 hours he passed to the great beyond. All that tender care and loving hands could do was of no avail.
Funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon, Feb. 7, at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. M.E. Hayes, pastor of the Keosauqua Methodist church. Interment in the Fairfield cemetery.
