Joseph Elmer Burkett

Joseph Elmer, son of Michael and Anna Burkett, was born Feb. 9, 1875, at Elkhart, Ill., and died at his home near Keosauqua, Ia., Nov. 8, 1936, aged 61 years, 9 months and 29 days.

He was united in marriage with Nora Judd in Elkhart, Ill., and after five years the Burketts moved to Iowa and for a while lived on a farm near Cantril. From this place they moved into Cantril, where Mr. Burkett engaged in business. Two years ago the family moved to their farm home near Keosauqua at which home the death occurred.

Joe, as he is remembered by the people of Cantril, was a good citizen, neighbor and friend, having served on the Town Council. He was a devoted father, helpful to the children. He is survived by a devoted wife, two children, William and Kathleen, the former taking post graduate work in Keosauqua school, the latter in high school. He has two brothers and a sister, Jim, Orville of Keosauqua; Mabel Carr of Keokuk, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted in the M. E. church in Cantril, Nov. 10 at two, by Rev. F. M. James, former pastor of this place, Rev. Griffeth assisting. Burial was in Cantril cemetery.

Pall bearers, W. T. Roberts, Ira Creath, James Smith, Henry Beatty, Lim Jones, Elmer Oyler, B. C. Casady, R. Jack. Mrs. Ausberger and Mrs. Jones sang at the funeral with Mrs. Thomas Wilburn at the piano.
