JOHN S. SINGLETON

Death came to end the sufferings of John Singleton at his home in Valley Junction last Friday, Nov. 7th, 1913. Mr. Singleton had been ailing for a considerable time, but not until the first of July of this year did he give up and his condition become serious. He grew gradually worse and was taken to the hospital in Des Moines for an operation, but after an incision was made and his condition fully discovered, no hope was entertained for his recovery. His loved ones attended him with marked devotion until the end.

John Singleton was born at Croton, Ia., Feb. 14, 1861 and was married on his 20th birthday, Feb. 14, 1881, to Miss Mary Holland. Three children came to brighten the home William E., J. E., and Margarie. Two are living, J. E. having died less than two years ago. His loving mother, his devoted wife and two children, two brothers William Singleton of Farmington and Dan Singleton of Valley Junction, and three sisters, Mrs. Frank Allen, Mt. Sterling, Mrs. Frank Kessler and Mrs. W. J. Allen of Farmington with many other relatives and admiring friends are left to mourn his untimely death.

He enteres (sic) employ of the C. R. & P. Railroad early in life and in due recognition of his faithfulness to duty and his ability he was promoted from time to time until he had reached the official position of Roadmaster. He was a loving husband, an indulgent father, a dutiful son and a faithful friend. He stood high with both the railroad officials and the men in his employ and he had a host of friends in the community where he was reared to manhood.

His remains were brought here Monday where appropriate funeral ceremonies were conducted by Rev. Father D. J. Ryan at St. Boniface Catholic church, after which his body was laid to rest in Farmington cemetery.

A special car containing roadmaster Mr. Dulin and more than half a hundred railroad men to attend the last sad rites, thus attesting their friendship for their deceased chief and fellow workman.

His aged mother and the entire family have the sympathy of a host of friends in this hour of their sorrow.

A FORMER CITIZEN DIES
---------------
Death of John Singleton at Valley Junction Last Friday

John Singleton, a former Farmington boy, son of Mrs. Jane Singleton of this city, died at his home in Valley Junction, Iowa, last Friday, Nov. 7, after a long and painful illness. His body was brought here for burial Monday, the funeral services being held at St. Boniface church at 2 o’clock that afternoon, Rev. Father D. J. Ryan officiating.

Mr. Singleton had many warm and admiring friends in Farmington, the place of his birth and boyhood days, who are deeply grieved over his death. Up until the time of his taking sick he was a splendid example of a physical man, and a valued employee of the Rock Island railroad, his position being that of roadmaster. His sickness dates from July 1 last. About four weeks ago he was operated on for stomach trouble, but the operation disclosed a condition for which there was no relief, and since that time his family and relatives had been waiting for the end which they knew must come.

On his twentieth birthday, Feb. 14, 1881, he was married to Miss Mary Holland, who with two children survives him. The surviving children are W. E. Singleton and Miss Marguerite. One son, J.
