Charles S. Johnston (should read "Roberts")

Charles Sylvester, son of Elias and Maria Roberts, was born January 18, 1849 in Hamilton county, Indiana and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. R.S. Johnston Tuesday morning, July 7 at 5:45 at the age of 86 years, 5 months and 19 days.

He was married to Martha Ann Brown March 5, 1879 who preceded him in death May 18, 1933. To this union were born four sons and five daughters, all of whom survive him: Mrs. Dessie Johnston, Mrs. Ethel Williams and Harry of Birmingham; Mrs. Stella Calhoun of New York City; O.M. Roberts of Fairfield, Iowa; Mrs. Grace Allerdice of Burlington; Orin R. of Pine, Arizona; Guy E. of Fairfield, Conn.; Mrs. Naomi Lawson of Batavia, Iowa. He is survived by ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, one brother, M.J. Roberts of Ottumwa and one sister, Mrs. Rachel Crosby, Denver, Colo.

He came to Iowa with his family in 1899 locating on a farm near Birmingham. He retired in the spring of a 1919, moving to Birmingham, which has since been his home. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and the Loyal Worker's class which he enjoyed attending as long as his health permitted. He has always enjoyed good health as his long life indicated, his last illness was of short duration. He was cheerful and conscious until just a few hours before his passing.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Birmingham at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 9 with a short sermon by Rev. H.C. Druse and music by the Williams brothers.

Note: Transcribed as on newspaper obit with headline showing last name JOHNSTON. Body of article suggests surname of ROBERTS, however. Son and brother in obit also named ROBERTS.
