James Wilson Gaston

James Wilson Gaston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gaston, was born in Vernon, Van Buren county, April 4, 1847, and died March 30, 1934, at his home near Mt. Sterling at the age of 86 years, 11 months and 26 days.

His early life was spent in Vernon, where he assisted his father in running the ferry at that place. He later, with his parents, moved to a farm in Henry township. At this place, known as the Gaston homestead, he was united in marriage to Rosa McIntire, January 13, 1870. They began keeping house in a log cabin in Vernon township and their marriage extended for 64 years.

Surviving are his widow, three children, Mrs. Charles Madden, Mt. Sterling; Will and Clyde, of near Mt. Sterling; seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Anna Gaston, Ft. Madison; two brothers, Will Gaston, of Burlington, and Charles, of Ft. Madison. One daughter, Mrs. John Tharp, preceded him in death.

Mr. Gaston, familiarly known as "Pop", was of a kind, forgiving and jolly nature, a loving husband and indulgent father. He was a member of the Mt. Sterling Methodist church for a number of years.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. J.C. Porath, Fairfield, Ia., were held at the Center Chapel church, Sunday, April 1. Burial was made in the cemetery there.
